How are my property taxes shared?

The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is at the Municipal level of the four levels of government:

  • Municipal
  • Regional
  • Provincial
  • Federal

Property taxes in Niagara-on-the-Lake are used to fund services provided by the first three (3) of these levels: The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Regional Municipality of Niagara and the Province of Ontario (for the Ministry of Education).

This means about 23% of every property tax dollar goes to the Town; the rest is split among the Region of Niagara and Province of Ontario.


How does the Town get its money?

In 2019, 39.6% of the Town's revenue has come from user fees and service charges. Other revenue sources include property taxes, reserve funding, federal and provincial grants, and by-law charges and sales.
