Building upon the Town’s rich history, architecture, and beautiful aesthetics, the proposed entry feature can reflect the values of the Town. Increasing the visibility of this gateway to the Historic Old Town, the identity of the feature can be reinforced as a landmark that meets the needs and wants of community members, supports downtown growth, and inspires the public. This new iconic feature must have the ability to evoke interest throughout four seasons using different plant materials in harmony with its context.

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

The goal is to consult with the public to obtain feedback on analysis, alternatives, and decisions for this project. The Town and project team's promise to the public is to keep them informed, to listen to and acknowledge concerns and aspirations, and to provide feedback on how public input influenced the decisions and designs for this project.

The survey is closed. A summary of the survey results has been presented in a report to Council on Monday, August 30. Thank you to all survey participants.

BACKGROUND

The Queen and Mississagua bed has been installed at the terminus of Mississagua Street and Queen Street since the early 1980s. This flower bed annually hosts floral displays with signage that celebrates a community organization or significant Town-related milestones. Spring sees an exhibition of tulips, while summer and fall present a horticultural display, along with the selected community organization or Town-related signage. In the winter, signage is displayed that welcomes visitors to the Town’s winter activities and festivals.

In December of 2019, the Lord Mayor and Town staff received a proposal from Mr. Gerry Kowalchuk. His vision was to improve the Queen and Mississagua bed, and he was willing to cover the entire renovation cost. This offer was an incredible donation of $250,000 from the Gerald Kowalchuk Family Fund.

The Seferian Design Group (SDG) was selected as the landscape architect, and Three Seasons Landscape Group was chosen as the lead landscape contractor.
