Week 13 concluded the 2019 Garden of the Week contest. Thank you to everyone who submitted nominations over the summer months. The Town greatly appreciates the work of the Communities in Bloom Committee and the Niagara-on-the-Lake Horticultural Society for running the contest over the past thirteen weeks. Thank you to our prize sponsors; Caroline Estate Winery, Regal Florist and Garden Centre, Penner Home Hardware Building Centre and Miracle Gro. Lastly, thank you to the local media who covered the contest and published photos in the paper each week.

    The winner for Week 13 is 155 Loretta Drive, owned by Brian and Jackie Lonergan. The comments from the judges are as follows; “The owners have created a charming entrance to their home using paths, and the colour red, as a focal point in their flowers and garden chairs. A weeping pine and bushes create privacy from the porch seat and there is an interesting blend of stones and creeping plants."

    The winner for Week 12 is 481 Gate Street, owned by Judy and Sonny D’Mello. The comments from the judges are as follows; “Lovely symmetrical gardens with hostas, plate hibiscus, cedars and a maple tree. The window boxes on the balcony at a nice ambiance. Overall, a very colorful garden that has been well maintained.”

    The winner for Week 11 is 125 Centre Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake, owned by Edward and Demi Nasello. The comments from the judges are as follows; “A trio of trees, birch, Japanese maple, and dogwood, sets off this very attractive front garden. The curving perennial border leads the eye from the street to the verandah and to the side garden which overflows with pretty pink roses. The pleasant combination of perennials, shrubs and trees provides a balance of textures and shades of green.”

    The winner for Week 10 is 1994 York Street, Queenston, owned by Mary Kiss. The comments from the judges are as follows; “A mature garden with a lovely mix of flowering shrubs and hydrangeas. There are lots of low spreading evergreens. A mix of deciduous trees and evergreens are centered with a lovely red maple. The garden is calm and has many textures. It has been lovingly cared for over the years.”

    The winner for Week 9 is 33 Prideaux Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake, owned by Michael and Jill Burke. The comments from the judges are as follows; “This harmonious, mature garden has a variety of interesting, mostly shade plants beautifully arranged for maximum flow and rhythm. Touches of colour of well-placed flowers highlight the textures of different foliage plants and move the eye throughout the garden. Several attractive urns and hardscaping provide interesting focal points. This lovely garden wraps around the house creating a very beautiful corner setting.”

    The winner for Week 8 is 19 Colonel Butler Crescent, Niagara-on-the-Lake, owned by Jan Van Haren and Brian Carberry. The comments from the judges are as follows; “This eclectic, welcoming garden has a large variety of trees and shrubs that reflects pride of ownership and the owners passion for gardening.”

    The winner for Week 7 is 298 Four Mile Creek Road, St. Davids owned by Karen Felesko. The comments from the judges are as follows; “Karen is an artist and metal sculpturist located in St Davids, NOTL. Her pieces can be seen in public spaces around Niagara. Karen’s garden reflects her passion and her control of materials by deploying a monochromatic scheme complimenting her work along with a beautiful use of hardscape."

    The winner for Week 6 is 53 Kirkwood Drive, Niagara-on-the-Lake owned by Diana and Hermano Ponte. The comments from the judges are as follows; "The garden has good rhythm and flow, with good colour composition and an attractive use of hard scape. This Garden reflects pride of ownership and is very well maintained.”

    The winner for Week 5 is 14541 Niagara River Parkway, Queenston, owned by William and Bonita Leslie. The comments from the judges are as follows; "The beautifully maintained garden has a well-planned balance of colour, shapes, and textures. Their effective arrangement of plants and colours leads the eyes of viewers across the entire garden, from the arbor through a hedge of Annabelle hydrangeas at the side of the house to the two hydrangea standards that frame their front entrance, and across the driveway to another bed of perennials, shrubs and rocks. They have chosen colour combinations that work well together and contribute to the flow throughout the garden."

    The winner for Week 4 is 118 Johnson Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake, owned by Paul Evans and Scott Langill. The comments from the judges are as follows; “This is an old fashioned garden that frames the period home with a mix of trees, shrubs, perennials and stone sculptures. In addition, a lovely arbor is covered in roses and window boxes which completes the look."”
